Access and register

If you register as a customer on Metro Pay and pay with your physical bank card, you can benefit from discounts which are valid until 31st December 2024,  therefore paying the same amount as the “Tarjeta Monedero” (pre-paid top-up card), which is 0.33 cents per journey.

Other advantages to the EMV system (without tickets or top-up cards) are travelling and paying later in one payment the first few days of the following month.  You will also be able to check the Metro de Málaga website and App to see the number of journeys made and therefore find out how much you will be charged.

Those passengers who have not registered and who pay with a device and not a physical bank card, will continue paying the normal ticket price of €1.35 at the end of the day.

What is it?

It is a validation and payment system that allows you to access and travel by metro using a EMV contactless bank card.

You will be able to travel using your physical debit or credit bank card or through your bank card on your smart device.

By doing this, you will not have to buy or top up your travel document/ticket which are issued at station ticket machines.

How does it work?

If you are going to use your EMV contactless card, you will be able to start travelling and enjoying the advantages of the Metro Pay system at any time.  You only have to place your physical or virtual card near the reader provided and the validation process will take place.

If you are not registered on Metro Pay or you use a different means of payment to your registered physical card, you will be charged €1.35, the price of a normal ticket “Billete Ocasional” and your journeys will be charged for at the end of the day.

However, if you register and use your physical bank card, you will benefit from the discounts which are valid and you will be charged the “TarifaMonedero” amount (top-up card fare – 0.33 cents.)

This means of payment also allows “multi-validation”, meaning that you can travel in a group, as long as you travel together from the start to the end of the journey and it applies to groups of up to 9 validations.

Where is it?

The system is available at all stations and surface stops.

At underground stations you can validate your bank card at the special PMR (people with reduced mobility) wide walkways and at any of the validation points at Guadalmedina or Atarazanas station.

The means provided for the EMV system are named using the logotype Metro Pay.

At surface stops you will be able to find them at any validation machine situated on both platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are registered on Metro Pay and use your physical debit or credit card, you will pay the current “Tarifa Monedero” pre-paid top-up card fare (0.33 cents), taking advantage of the current discounts which are valid until 31st December 2024.

Those passengers who are not registered, will continue paying the normal ticket fare “billete occasional” (€1.35).  Those passengers who are registered and pay using a smart device, will also be charged this fare.

The users who are registered will receive a monthly charge at the beginning of the following month, with the total number of journeys made during the month.

Those who are not registered will be charged at the end of each day, with the total number of journeys made during that day.

This method of payment allows “multi-validation” which means groups of up to nine people who use the same card for the payment can travel together, as long as they travel together from the start (origin) to the end (destination) of the journey.

If Metro de Málaga staff request to see your ticket, you will be able to demonstrate that you have a valid ticket with the card or smart device you have used to make the payment/validation.

On placing it near the checking system, your travel information will appear in the same way as it does when using a normal physical ticket, without charging you any additional amounts.

By using this means of payment and validation, you will not need to buy a physical ticket, meaning you will save time, because you will no longer need to buy or top up your travel card.

If you register on Metro Pay and use your physical bank card, you will benefit from the current discounts, meaning the “tarjeta monedero” or top-up card fare.

The EMV system is used by Visa (except Revolut) and Master Card.

You must have the contactless payment method enabled, without the need of PIN numbers for amounts under €20.

This system has been designed respecting European Safety and Security standards.

Under no circumstances will confidential information be stored.

In this second phase, you will be able to register on Metro Pay and obtain access to the “tarifa monedero” (top-up card fare) of 0.33 cents.

If you are not registered, you will be charged the normal ticket price “billete occasional” of €1.35.

No.  If a person has special discounts for families with numerous members (normal or special) or under 30s, they will have to use this card and not the one with EMV.

In the case of top-up Transport Consortium cards, in order to benefit from the reduced fare, payment or validation must be made with the physical Transport Consortium card and not the EMV system.

In order to leave the station, you must use the same payment system as the one used on entry (phone, watch or physical bank card).   If you use a different one, even if that one is linked to the same account, you will be charged an additional amount, due to the fact that the system will count it as a different or additional journey.
